Screen protection

Screen protection in your dashboard keeps what people see in your app from being captured with screenshots or screen recordings, for example to keep paid courses private. You and your managers change it; Staff on your team can't open it.

Blocking screenshots and screen recording

Under Block screenshots and screen recording, choose one:

  • Off: people can take screenshots and record the screen anywhere in the app. This is where every app starts.
  • Course content only (academies only): lessons, quizzes, their attachments and lesson videos, full screen too, are protected. The rest of the app isn't.
  • The whole app: every screen of the app is protected.
  • As set in the Yallapp plugin (WordPress only): follows "Block screenshots & screen recording" in the plugin's settings on your website. WordPress apps start here until you choose something else (see the WordPress plugin).

Select Save. The app follows your choice the next time it opens. On WordPress, your website gets it within a minute when it can be reached, otherwise at its next check, twice a day.

What people see

  • Android: screenshots and screen recordings of protected screens come out black, and the app is hidden in the list of recent apps.
  • iPhone and iPad: Apple doesn't let apps block screenshots. While the screen is recorded or shared, protected screens are covered. Screenshots of them come out blank where iOS allows it, and the app shows a short notice after one. The app is blurred in the app switcher.
  • Attachments (academies): while protection is on, course files open only in the app's own viewer, without sharing, saving to the phone or printing. Saved lessons always stay encrypted inside the app.

No app can stop someone from filming the screen with another phone. In academies, the watermark on lesson videos shows whose account it was, and Screenshots taken on the Analytics page counts the screenshots people took of protected lessons, per lesson. Only iPhones tell the app about a screenshot; Android blocks them, so none are counted there.

Protection works in the installed app. The preview in your browser can't block screenshots, so it looks the same with protection on or off (see Preview your app).

Videos from YouTube and other video sites

Lesson videos and video blocks from YouTube, Vimeo, Bunny Stream, Wistia, Dailymotion and Loom play in each site's own player, with its controls, logo and links, as the sites ask.

With Hide the video site's branding (at your own risk) ticked, the app plays these videos behind its own controls and keeps the site's title, logo, buttons and end screens out of sight. It's off unless you turn it on. YouTube's terms don't allow apps to hide or cover its player or branding: YouTube can block your videos from playing in the app, or act against your app. Videos you upload to Media, or host on Bunny Stream or a paid Vimeo plan, don't carry this risk. If YouTube videos stop playing, see Videos don't play.

Apps on your own API

An app on your own API gets both settings from that API: its /config sends app.screen_protection (off, content or app) and app.hide_video_branding (true or false). The page shows this instead of the choices. See Connect your own API.
